Character Name: Edward Atlus
Age: 19
World and Character Information: Both of these are here!
I feel it's worth including a link to his permissions post for easy mod access.
Personality:
Edward’s default state of being is warm and cheery. Despite the constant biting cold of his home, he tries to present himself to others as a generally happy person. He’s a very kind and caring person and will likely be one of the first to attempt to lift spirits in a group. Though the complexity of certain circumstances may evade him, he’ll put in his best attempt at consoling a companion. Most evident of this tendency are his numerous attempts at comforting the fae ex-god with whom he’s developed an attachment (called Sire for the sake of having something to be referred to as) about his sudden, unwanted mortality, where Ed initially comes off unintentionally as callous to Sire’s plights.
Though he certainly has his niche in cooking and basic botany, he’s not the brightest in most subjects, so he can fail to grasp more abstract ideas beyond the most ground-level details. Such is his difficulty in understanding Sire’s mortality versus his godhood as well as other things like the workings of magic and the planes of the universe. Adding to this difficulty is his mix of a willingness to learn and a stubbornness about his own knowledgebase; he very desperately clings to the things he truly believes are the way the world works, and attempting to convince him otherwise is a struggle.
Ed frequently hallucinates in a variety of senses, and as a result his reality is often brought into question. Also consequently, though, he’s very defensive about what he believes is his reality because he wants to feel like his experiences are real and valid and not that it’s all a fabrication of his brain’s creation. The subject is his most common point of contention with others, and when others question his own sensory experiences, a temper can manifest. (On the other hand, a small portion of these hallucinations are actually manifestations of a budding magical true sight; one of the inciting incidents of his story involves an argument with his younger brother over the presence of a cathedral in the woods that his brother claims wasn’t real. The argument ends with Edward insulting his brother before he storms out of the house to find the cathedral again, but the church he saw was actually real.)
He’s strong-willed in his beliefs and will state when he feels something is morally incorrect. He expresses his disdain to a god over Sire’s confession that his former worshippers were killed in an effort to protect his name even though the murders were entirely in Sire’s own self-defence. His sense of right and wrong is hard-set like his sensory worldviews, though he’s still willing to hear the other side out to understand their point of view. He knows that sometimes he’s out of his element and is willing to concede to others to get to know them better, and this act of concession is usually accompanied by a palpable hesitance about him.
Despite his moral compass being somewhat hard-wired, Edward is usually very forgiving toward others. He’s a strong believer in second (or more) chances, and more than anything he wants to help people grow and be better than their previous selves. His patience with Sire as the god struggles to trust humans in the mortal world extends across several months until Sire finally begins to open up to him and leave the fae-space within which he’s sequestered himself. In particular, he’s very forgiving of offences committed against himself and less so when they hurt someone else close to him. He’s especially drawn to care for those younger and less capable than himself, a nurturing quality present ever since he began to care for himself and his brother on his own following the passing of their father. This caring instinct can result in him getting hurt for the sake of others, though.
When conflict arises, Ed prefers to deal with it as harmlessly as possible. He strays away from violence as often as possible and generally detests it because of the abuse he went through with his late dad. Even in the face of bitter gods, he tries to first diffuse a tense situation with simple diplomacy to avoid as much physical strife as possible. His magic - largely plant- and general utility-based - reflects this, as it isn’t meant for straight combat, though his descent into lichdom contrasts this by granting him more destructive capabilities. Even with this power, though, he usually elects not to fight, as everyone is merely hurt in the end in his eyes.
When he’s totally unsure about what to do in a situation, or when he’s confronted with some great fear of his, his end action often is to freeze up and cower. It’s more of an instinct than anything, a consequence of feeling trapped and alone with his father and not knowing what else to do after he’s done everything he can to shield his brother. In situations where the odds are totally overwhelming him, he stops functioning and tries to just wait it out in hopes that it’ll go away on its own.
